SHC's Relationship with Saskatchewan Housing Authorities
Most of the social housing stock in Saskatchewan is administered through community based housing authorities. These authorities report in one of three main ways. The four largest cities report directly to SHC. The remaining southern Saskatchewan housing authorities receive management support through six Territory Offices: Central, Melfort, North Battleford, Swift Current, Weyburn and Yorkton. In northern Saskatchewan, regional housing authorities have been established to manage units in most northern communities: Beaver River (Beauval), Cumberland House, Northeast (Creighton), Ile a la Crosse, Buffalo Narrows, La Loche Non-Profit, and La Ronge. In turn, they receive support through the Prince Albert office of SHC.
There are more than 270 housing authorities in southern Saskatchewan that manage social housing within their community. Each housing authority is independently managed and has a board of directors and a manager, responsible for day-to-day administration of the assigned housing projects. Close contact with communities is achieved through local management and representation on housing authority boards.
In northern Saskatchewan local housing authorities and non-profit groups have been established to manage the housing units. Where numbers warrant it, communities have banded together to create a regional housing authority, with representatives from each participating community. In this way, local input is achieved in housing management.
Each Housing Authority has a board of volunteers appointed by Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments. The Board provides management services for the purposes of administering, managing, operating, maintaining and performing leasing services with respect to housing projects in our community.
